Coffee stories in Croatia

Croatians love coffee. That's one of the first things you may notice when you visit one of its cities. You can find many beautiful coffee shops in every street and all of them have people drinking at all times. I have heard one time that many people when they visit Zagreb for the first time, they think is a holiday because there are people sitting at cafes not only in the morning but all day long. It happened to me as well, I remember I couldn't understand what was the working schedule there, I thought: when do these people work? But after living there for more than a month I was able to understand better the Croatian coffee culture and also I started to embrace it. I could also say that it's one of the things I miss the most about being in Croatia so that's why I want to share with you in this post my little coffee story travelling through the country.
As I said in the beginning, Croatians love coffee, they drink coffee many times in the day, two, three or even four times. It's not that they just drink it but they also have like this amazing ritual in which they just meet with someone to chat and sit at the coffee shop for hours. And this could be at any time during the day, the time when both of the participants are available because they are going to stay at the cafe for a couple of hours, just relaxing, talking and sipping the coffee very slowly, alowing the time to just pass by.
It's the perfect moment to discuss ideas, to seal deals, to catch up with a good friend, to tell important news, to reflect about life, the talk around a cup of coffee can lead to any topic. It's also the perfect place to see and be seen.
Even though I was travelling alone, I ended up adapting this ritual for myself too. Everyday after having lunch I would go to the city center to have a cup of coffee in one of the many beautiful terraces that you can find in Zagreb streets. Not only all of the coffees I have tried were so good and delicious but also I enjoyed a lot sitting there with no worries in my mind, just watching all the people pass by and absorbing the vibe and energy of this city. Also whenever I went to a new city, after a little walk around I always ended up looking for the perfect place to enjoy my coffee of the day. I tried to take pictures of all the coffees I had during my days in Croatia and put them all together in this post to show you my trip from a different perspective. It's a different kind of travel post but I hope you like it :)

Oops! I forgot to take the picture before finishing the coffee and the cake :P

  1. This truly made me smile. :) I am sitting in front of my laptop drinking my hot cup of coffee and imagining how wonderful it must feel to take in so much peace while you are traveling alone. I feel that I am most connected with myself when I am by myself in places that are not familiar to me. Have a lovely day!

  6. I guess it's a culture very similar to the italian ones, where all decisions are taken in front of a coffee!
